Overview
1000 Steps is one of Bonaire’s most iconic shore dives. The name is a bit of an exaggeration (there are actually 67 limestone steps leading down to the beach), but carrying your gear back up them in the Caribbean heat might make it feel like a thousand!
What you’ll see
The reef slopes down gradually, making it an excellent dive for all levels. You can expect to see:
- Hawksbill and Green Sea Turtles (frequently seen in the shallows)
- Parrotfish and Blue Tangs
- Stunning elkhorn and staghorn coral formations
- Occasional passing Manta Rays in the blue
The Dive Experience
Like most diving in Bonaire, this is a self-guided shore dive. You park your truck at the top of the cliff, gear up, walk down the steps, and wade right in. Navigation is incredibly easy: swim out to the drop-off, turn right or left, and turn around when you hit half a tank.
Getting There
The site is located on the scenic northern tourist road, just past the radio towers. It’s about a 15-minute drive north from Kralendijk.
