The Best Dive Centres in the Red Sea (Beyond Hurghada)
While Hurghada is the most famous mega-hub for Red Sea diving, it is just one small part of an incredible coastline. The Red Sea offers staggeringly clear water, dramatic drop-offs, and world-class wrecks, but the “vibe” and diving style vary wildly depending on which town you base yourself in.

Here is how to choose the right dive centre outside of the Hurghada bubble.
1. Sharm El-Sheikh: The Polished Resort Experience
Located on the Sinai Peninsula, Sharm El-Sheikh is slightly more upscale than Hurghada and offers access to the legendary Ras Mohammed National Park.
- The Diving Style: Like Hurghada, diving here is dominated by large, comfortable day boats. The coral gardens in Ras Mohammed are spectacular, and you have easy access to the famous SS Thistlegorm wreck (though it requires an early start).
- The Dive Centres: You will find massive, highly professional 5-Star PADI and SSI centres attached to luxury resorts.
- What to look for: Look for centres that offer early departures (before 8:00 AM) to Ras Mohammed. The sites can get incredibly crowded, and arriving before the other boats makes a huge difference. If you are taking your Open Water Course, ensure the centre uses a dedicated training pool, not the open sea, for your confined water skills.
2. Dahab: The Laid-Back Bohemian Hub
Just an hour north of Sharm El-Sheikh lies Dahab, the polar opposite of the mega-resorts. Dahab is a relaxed, bohemian town famous for its shore diving and technical diving scene.
- The Diving Style: There are almost no boats in Dahab. You gear up in the back of a pickup truck (or sometimes on a camel!) and walk straight into the water over the fringing reef.
- The Famous Sites: Dahab is home to the infamous Blue Hole and the Canyon.
- The Dive Centres: The shops here are smaller, deeply integrated into the local Bedouin culture, and highly social. It is a fantastic place for solo travelers looking for a budget-friendly beginner experience.
- Technical Diving: Because the Blue Hole drops to over 100 meters just steps from the shore, Dahab is a global hub for technical and freediving training. If you are looking to progress to deep Trimix diving, this is the place.
Pro Tip: The Blue Hole is safe if you stay on the outside “saddle” (around 20-30 meters). Never attempt to swim through the “Arch” at 55 meters on a single recreational tank. Reputable dive centres will strictly enforce this limit; avoid any guide who offers to take you deeper than your certification allows.
3. Marsa Alam: The Pristine Deep South
Located far south of Hurghada on the mainland, Marsa Alam was once a sleepy fishing village. While resorts are growing, the reefs here remain significantly more pristine and less crowded than those in the north.
- The Diving Style: A mix of zodiac (RIB) diving from the shore and daily large boat trips to famous offshore reef systems like Elphinstone.
- The Marine Life: Marsa Alam is famous for big pelagic encounters. This is where you go to see Oceanic Whitetip Sharks (at Elphinstone) and the resident Dugong at Abu Dabbab.
- The Dive Centres: Because the resorts are spread out, you are largely tied to the dive centre located within your specific hotel.
- What to look for: Before booking your hotel, read reviews specifically about its attached dive centre. Ensure they offer frequent trips to Elphinstone (if you are an Advanced diver) and that their rental regulators and BCDs are well maintained in the harsh, salty environment.
4. Red Sea Logistics & Safety
When diving anywhere in Egypt:
- Hydration is Critical: The desert heat combined with breathing dry compressed air will dehydrate you rapidly, significantly increasing your risk of Decompression Sickness. Drink water constantly.
- Dive Insurance: Ensure you have dedicated dive insurance (like DAN). While there are excellent hyperbaric chambers in Sharm and Hurghada, evacuation from remote southern sites or liveaboards is expensive.
