Overview
Chumphon Pinnacle is Koh Tao’s premier dive site. Located about 40 minutes northwest of the island, it consists of one massive granite pinnacle and several smaller ones, starting at around 14 meters and dropping down to the sandy bottom at 35 meters.
What you’ll see
Because of its depth and location in open water, it attracts larger pelagic fish than the shallow bays of the island:
- Massive schools of Trevally and Barracuda hunting
- Giant Groupers hiding in the crevices
- Batfish following divers around
- The occasional Whale Shark (if you are very lucky!)
The Dive Experience
Due to the depth (the top of the pinnacle is at 14m), this site is generally reserved for Advanced Open Water divers, or Open Water divers doing their deep adventure dive. There can occasionally be strong currents, and visibility can vary from 10m to 30m depending on the season.
Getting There
Almost every dive centre on Koh Tao runs trips to Chumphon Pinnacle a few times a week. It’s usually scheduled as an early morning dive before the winds pick up.
