Overview
Black Hills is considered by many to be the best dive site in Utila. It is a true seamount (an underwater mountain) located off the southeastern coast of the island. The mount rises from the deep ocean floor to a peak at about 10 meters below the surface.
What you’ll see
Because it sits in open water, the seamount acts as a magnet for marine life.
- Massive, swirling schools of Creole Wrasse, Yellowtail Snapper, and Horse-eye Jacks.
- Large Barracudas patrolling the outer edges.
- Excellent macro life hidden in the barrel sponges.
- If you are lucky, Utila’s famous Whale Sharks are sometimes seen cruising past in the blue.
The Dive Experience
You descend directly onto the top of the seamount and spend the dive slowly spiraling your way up from the depths. Currents can be moderate to strong, which is what brings in the nutrient-rich water and the massive schools of fish. It is an exhilarating, action-packed dive.
Getting There
Black Hills is accessible via dive boats from Utila’s main harbor. The ride takes approximately 30-40 minutes depending on sea conditions.
