Overview
Duppy Waters is located on the wilder, less-visited northern coast of Utila. In Caribbean folklore, a “Duppy” is a ghost or spirit, and the site earns its name from its mysterious, deeply fissured reef structure that creates dramatic shadows and deep, dark swim-throughs.
What you’ll see
The topography here is the star of the show. The reef wall is slashed with deep ravines and undercut by caves.
- Spotted Eagle Rays are frequently seen gliding along the wall.
- Large Groupers and Nurse Sharks often rest inside the deeper caves and crevices.
- The wall is draped in massive barrel sponges and deep-water gorgonians.
The Dive Experience
Because it is on the north side of the island, Duppy Waters is exposed to the open ocean. It can experience larger swells and stronger currents than the sheltered south side. It is a sheer wall dive that plunges into the abyss, making it best suited for Advanced divers comfortable with deep diving and perfect buoyancy control.
Getting There
Access requires a boat trip from Utila’s main harbor, wrapping around to the north side of the island. The journey takes about 45 minutes, and access is dependent on favorable weather and sea conditions.
