Overview
El Puertito is a small, picturesque fishing village on the southwest coast of Tenerife. Beneath the surface of its sheltered bay lies a sandy bottom and rocky volcanic reefs that are home to a famous resident population of Green Sea Turtles.
What you’ll see
The undisputed highlights are the turtles, which are generally very calm and approachable (though touching is strictly forbidden). In addition to the turtles, you will find:
- Large Common Stingrays gliding over the sand.
- Cuttlefish and Octopus hiding in the volcanic rock crevices.
- Schools of Roncadores (grunts) sheltering near the rocks.
The Dive Experience
This is one of the most relaxing and accessible dives in the Canary Islands. The maximum depth is around 15 meters, but the best encounters usually happen in just 5-8 meters of water. With practically zero current and a sandy, bright bottom, it is perfect for try-dives, Open Water courses, and underwater photographers.
Getting There
Most dive centers from the southern resorts (like Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos) access El Puertito via a short 15-minute RIB (speedboat) ride, dropping you directly into the calm bay.
