Understanding Manta Rays
There are two main species of manta ray you might encounter while diving: the Reef Manta Ray (Mobula alfredi) and the Giant Oceanic Manta Ray (Mobula birostris).
Unlike stingrays, mantas do not have a venomous tail stinger. They are filter feeders, swimming with their massive mouths wide open to consume massive quantities of zooplankton. They are highly intelligent, possessing the largest brain-to-body mass ratio of all cold-blooded fish.
Cleaning Stations
The most reliable way to dive with manta rays is by visiting “cleaning stations.” These are specific coral bommies or reef structures where mantas hover, allowing small cleaner wrasse to pick parasites off their skin and out of their gills.
If you find a cleaning station, the golden rule is to stay low and stay still. If divers chase the mantas, they will leave. If divers kneel quietly on the sandy bottom, the mantas will often swoop incredibly close, doing loop-the-loops in the bubbles.

Why Dive from Cairns?
Cairns is the primary gateway to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), the largest living structure on Earth. While the inner reefs closest to Cairns suffer from heavy day-tripper traffic, Cairns is also the departure point for the iconic liveaboards that head out to the Ribbon Reefs and the Coral Sea.
The Diving Experience
The GBR offers everything from shallow coral gardens to dramatic drop-offs.
- Day Boats: These cater heavily to introductory divers and snorkelers. They often visit moored pontoons. If you are certified, ensure you book a dedicated dive boat rather than a massive tourist vessel.
- Liveaboards: This is where the magic happens. A multi-day trip allows you to escape the crowds and visit world-class sites like the Cod Hole (famous for massive, friendly Potato Cod) and Steve’s Bommie.
Marine Life Highlights
The biodiversity is staggering. You can expect to see everything from tiny nudibranchs to massive Minke whales (if you visit between June and July). Six of the world’s seven species of sea turtles can be found here, alongside reef sharks, giant groupers, and thousands of species of reef fish.
Above the Surface
Cairns is a bustling tropical tourist hub. The Esplanade is packed with bars, restaurants, and a massive public lagoon. It is also the jumping-off point for exploring the Daintree Rainforest, meaning you can easily combine world-class diving with terrestrial jungle adventures.

Gili Islands
IndonesiaA short boat ride from Bali or Lombok, the three Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno, and Air) offer car-free living and arguably the highest concentration of green sea turtles in Southeast Asia. Currents can pick up slightly compared to Koh Tao, offering a gentle introduction to drift diving.

Why Dive the Gili Islands?
Located just off the northwest coast of Lombok (and a fast boat ride from Bali), the Gili Islands are a backpacker haven. Gili Trawangan (Gili T) is the largest and most developed, while Gili Air and Gili Meno offer quieter alternatives. The diving here is incredibly easy, making it one of the most popular places in Indonesia to get certified.
The Diving Experience
The Gilis are basically a massive sandbox for divers. The water is bath-warm (29°C year-round) and the sites are mostly sloping coral reefs with sandy bottoms.
- Currents: While you might experience mild currents, they are rarely overwhelming, and the boat crews are experts at dropping you precisely where you need to be.
- Logistics: Dive trips are incredibly short. You gear up at the shop, walk onto the boat, and are at the dive site within 10 to 15 minutes.
Marine Life Highlights
If you want to see turtles, this is the place. It is almost impossible to dive the Gilis without seeing green and hawksbill turtles—sometimes half a dozen on a single dive. Reef sharks are common at sites like Shark Point, and macro lovers will find plenty of nudibranchs and ghost pipefish.
Above the Surface
The Gilis are famous for having no motorized transport. You get around by bicycle, horse-drawn cart (cidomo), or walking. Gili T is infamous for its wild, full-moon-style beach parties, while Gili Air is a more mature yoga-and-diving retreat.
