Overview

Flynn Reef is one of the most highly regarded dive locations accessible via day boats and liveaboards from Cairns. Situated on the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef, it boasts exceptional water clarity and some of the healthiest hard coral coverage in the region.

What you’ll see

The reef is famous for its intricate architecture, featuring bommies (coral pinnacles), shallow lagoons, and dramatic drop-offs. Expect to encounter:

  • Whitetip Reef Sharks patrolling the sandy patches.
  • Green and Hawksbill Turtles resting under ledges.
  • Anemones bustling with Clownfish.
  • Massive, vividly colored Giant Clams.

The Dive Experience

Flynn Reef offers multiple dive profiles. Beginners can explore the shallow coral gardens at 10-15 meters, while advanced divers can navigate the deeper swim-throughs and wall sections that drop down to 30 meters. The currents are generally mild, making it an relaxing and highly photogenic dive.

Getting There

Flynn Reef is a standard stop for premium day boats and multi-day liveaboard expeditions departing from the Cairns Marlin Marina. The journey to the outer reef typically takes around 90 minutes on a fast catamaran.
