USCGC Duane (Wreck)

A pristine 327-foot US Coast Guard cutter sitting completely upright in 38 metres of blue water off Key Largo.

Min Cert: Advanced Open Water (30m)Max Depth: 38m (20m crow's nest · 30m main deck · 38m seabed)Entry: Day BoatConditions: Strong / Drift OnlyLocation: Florida Keys
⚠️ Mandatory Depth & Certification Rule

DEEP CURRENT WRECK: The Duane sits directly in the edge of the Florida Current (Gulf Stream). Strong surface currents are common. Divers must hold Advanced Open Water certification and be proficient in descending and ascending on mooring lines.

Overview: The Upright Coast Guard Cutter

Located one mile south of Molasses Reef, the USCGC Duane (WPG-33) is a 327-foot Treasury-class Coast Guard cutter that served from 1936 through WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam before being intentionally scuttled on 27 November 1987.

She rests completely upright on a clean sand seabed at 125 feet (38 metres), with the crow’s nest at 55 feet (17m) and the main bridge at 70 feet (21m).

Dive Route & Current Challenge

  • Gulf Stream Current: The current across the Duane is notoriously swift (1.5–3.0 knots). Divers must hold onto the mooring line from the moment they enter the water until they reach the shelter of the bridge deck.
  • The Crow’s Nest & Wheelhouse (18m–24m): Swirling with massive barracuda, amberjacks, and goliath groupers.
  • The Foredeck & Forward Gun Mount (30m–34m): Advanced divers can explore the forward deck guns and anchor chains.

Safety Requirements

  • Certification: Advanced Open Water (30m) and deep diving experience mandatory.
  • Nitrox 32%: Strongly recommended for extended NDL.

Technical Dive Profile & Navigation

1. Entry & Descent Mechanics

  • Descent Method: Direct giant-stride or negative back-roll from the boat, descending along the shot line to prevent surface drift.
  • Ear Equalization: Equalize continuously every 1 metre during the descent phase to prevent sinus or middle-ear barotrauma.
  • Compass Heading & Navigation: Set a primary heading toward the main reef structure. Maintain buddy contact within 2 metres throughout the descent.

2. Deep Section & Gas Management (14m to 38m)

  • NDL Discipline: At depths of 30m, your No-Decompression Limit ticks down rapidly. Monitor your dive computer continuously.
  • The Craig Rule: Divers certified to Open Water level (18m maximum) must stay on the upper reef shelf and never follow advanced divers down past 18m.
  • Turnaround Gas: Signal your buddy and start your ascent when the first diver reaches 110 bar (or one-third of usable cylinder capacity).

3. Ascent & 5m Safety Stop

  • Ascent Rate: Ascend along the reef wall at a controlled rate not exceeding 9 metres per minute.
  • Mandatory Safety Stop: Complete a strict 3-to-5-minute safety stop at 5 metres (15 feet) before deploying an SMB and surfacing with a 360-degree overhead scan.

Marine Life & Habitat Zones (Biologically Verified)

  • Apex & Pelagic Predators: Goliath Groupers (Epinephelus itajara), Great Barracuda, Blacktip Sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus).
  • Reef Fish & Keystone Species: Yellowtail Snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus), Porkfish (Anisotremus virginicus), Blue Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus).
  • Macro Biodiversity & Benthic Invertebrates: Spotted Morays (Gymnothorax moringa), Banded Coral Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus), Flamingo Tongues.
  • Elasmobranchs & Marine Reptiles: Atlantic Nurse Sharks, Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta caretta), Southern Stingrays.
