Overview: Diving with Playful Atlantic Grey Seals
Located off the coast of Northumberland in north-east England, the Farne Islands are home to one of the UK’s largest breeding colonies of Atlantic Grey Seals (Halichoerus grypus), with over 5,000 individuals living around the rocky islands.
This is universally celebrated as the most joyous and interactive wildlife dive in the British Isles.
The Seal Interaction Experience
- Topography: Shallow rocky reefs, gullies, and kelp forests ranging from 6m to 18m depth.
- The Encounter: As soon as divers drop into the kelp beds around The Crumstone or Longstone, curious juvenile seals approach from all angles:
- They nibble playfully on diver fin tips.
- They execute high-speed underwater barrel rolls through diver bubbles.
- They swim up to face masks, gazing into lenses with huge, puppy-dog eyes.
- Golden Rule of Seal Diving: Never chase or swim after a seal. Lie calmly on your back in a sandy kelp clearing at 8m–10m. The seals’ overwhelming curiosity will draw them right onto your chest!
Cold Water Logistics & Season
- Best Season: August to October (when the newborn pups from previous seasons are at their most inquisitive and playful, and water temperatures reach their annual high of 14°C–15°C).
- Suit: 7mm semi-dry with hood/gloves, or drysuit.
- Certification Level: Open Water (18m) with UK sea experience.
Technical Dive Profile & Navigation
1. Entry & Descent Mechanics
- Descent Method: Direct giant-stride or negative back-roll from the boat, descending along the shot line to prevent surface drift.
- Ear Equalization: Equalize continuously every 1 metre during the descent phase to prevent sinus or middle-ear barotrauma.
- Compass Heading & Navigation: Set a primary heading toward the main reef structure. Maintain buddy contact within 2 metres throughout the descent.
2. Deep Section & Gas Management (14m to 18m)
- NDL Discipline: At depths of 18m, your No-Decompression Limit ticks down rapidly. Monitor your dive computer continuously.
- The Craig Rule: Divers certified to Open Water level (18m maximum) must stay on the upper reef shelf and never follow advanced divers down past 18m.
- Turnaround Gas: Signal your buddy and start your ascent when the first diver reaches 110 bar (or one-third of usable cylinder capacity).
3. Ascent & 5m Safety Stop
- Ascent Rate: Ascend along the reef wall at a controlled rate not exceeding 9 metres per minute.
- Mandatory Safety Stop: Complete a strict 3-to-5-minute safety stop at 5 metres (15 feet) before deploying an SMB and surfacing with a 360-degree overhead scan.
Marine Life & Habitat Zones (Biologically Verified)
- Apex & Pelagic Predators: Atlantic Grey Seals (Halichoerus grypus), Basking Sharks (Cetorhinus maximus), Spiny Dogfish (Squalus acanthias).
- Reef Fish & Keystone Species: Conger Eels (Conger conger), Atlantic Wolffish (Anarhichas lupus), Ballan Wrasse (Labrus bergylta).
- Macro Biodiversity & Benthic Invertebrates: Tompot Blennies (Parablennius gattorugine), Yarrells Blennies, Nudibranchs (Coryphella lineata), Spiny Seahorses (Hippocampus guttulatus).
- Elasmobranchs & Marine Reptiles: Dead Mans Fingers (Alcyonium digitatum), Plumose Anemones (Metridium senile), Edible Crabs (Cancer pagurus), European Lobsters (Homarus gammarus).
